11:45a UCPBA Saskatoon Luncheon (11:45 )
Flanagan's, Senator Hotel (243 21st St E, corner of 21st St & 3rd Ave), Saskatoon
You are invited to attend our next Ukrainian Canadian Professional & Business Association of Saskatoon luncheon. Savelia will be our guest speaker talking about all the good work of NASHI.
WHO IS NASHI? Started in 2004, NASHI is a non-profit registered charity run entirely by dedicated volunteers. We are committed to fighting human trafficking locally and globally. Human Trafficking is a crime of exploitation especially of women and children. It is the illegal trade in human beings and is happening in Saskatoon. Locally NASHI has held numerous conferences and seminars. Globally, we have built the MAPLE LEAF CENTRE in Ukraine. It is a 14,000 sq.ft. educational live-in centre giving young girls a chance for a future. Ukraine is a country of extreme upheaval and girls as young as 7 years old are being trafficked around the world into the sex trade.
WHO IS SAVELIA? Savelia enjoyed the academic challenge of university while she acquired two degrees to equip her for a career in education. However, after successfully teaching in Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories for a few years she felt the need to further challenge herself. She decided to refurbish part of an old building on Broadway and opened Lydia’s Restaurant in 1982. While operating the restaurant a strong tug to the homeland of her parents culminated in her organizing tours to Ukraine.
In 2004, Savelia saw the issue of human trafficking first hand while on one of her tours. She was appalled and shocked! How could this modern day slavery be alive and thriving in the 21th century. How could thousands and thousands of children be taken into trafficking rings throughout the world? She like each one of us faced a dilemma – can I do anything to expose this atrocity or do I simply say this is not my concern. But, Savelia believes there are two ways to live. The first is on dry land where one can measure, and plan ahead. The second is to walk on the waters where it becomes impossible to measure and plan ahead. For her, most of her life was to live the second way and believed she could do something no matter how insignificant. After a few phone calls to friends and acquaintances, the charity NASHI was formed around her kitchen table. This is simply an example of how each of us can do something.

Synopsis: The story of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus is one of courage and true grit -- a vivid chronicle that celebrates the human spirit. This is the triumphant story of the original seventeen members of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus who survived World War II as a musical ensemble.
The early Chorus and the musicians who played the instrument known as the bandura had been systematically persecuted during the repression years in the Soviet Union. Hundreds of bandura players went missing and were executed in the 1930s. The Chorus was nearly wiped out in the early days of WWII. But with a stroke of fate, 17 men re-established the ensemble in Kyiv. In short order, the Chorus was forcibly transported out of Ukraine by the German occupying authorities, and incarcerated in a labour camp in Germany. In time they were assigned to perform in all the OST (Ostarbeiter) slave labour camps across Germany. The Chorus and their music brought hope to tens of thousands of Ostarbeiters displaced from Eastern Europe, many of whom were children. Their gift of music eventually carried them across the ocean to freedom in 1949. The Chorus thrives to this day upon the foundation these artists forged for future generations.
The film brings out the deepest roots of a fragile tradition, celebrating the resiliency of a music culture that has survived centuries. It provides an educational, informative and compelling perspective -- the personal stories of the last two survivors intercut with the collective history of the bandura throughout the ages. Interwoven with contemporary musical performances, the film illustrates the bandurist as bard, as seer, as spiritual emissary for the soul of the Ukrainian people, then and now, in Ukraine and beyond.
