   New immigrants interested in taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are invited to come out and register.
   It is very important to attend registration/assessment night as enrollment numbers will determine how many classes UCC-SB will be able to offer. Students will not be allowed to attend classes prior to assessment. Also, since class size is limited to 20 students, late registrants will need to go a waiting list.

December 4, 2008 -- Marion Graham Collegiate kindly offered alternate classroom space for our use as our usual space was unavailable the evening of Thursday, November 27th. UCC-SB used the opportunity to conduct an informational session on dental care and other health issues. Story

UCC-SB Awards ESL Students for Perfect Attendance

Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Saskatoon Branch offers ESL classes to new Ukrainian immigrants and their spouses. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday night at Lawson Heights School and Saturday mornings at Mohyla Institute. Four levels of English are offered -- basic literacy, upper beginner, intermediate and a combined upper intermediate/advanced class.
   Students from each of these classes were rewarded for their perfect attendance record from September 11 to October 28, 2008, the midpoint of the fall session. A total of 23 students from five different ESL classes qualified for the awards. A gift of stationery was presented to each of the students by Ms. Irene Pylypec, UCC-SB ESL Coordinator.

Ukrainians and Canadians: practise speaking English and Ukrainian in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.
   Ukrainian Immigrants can practise their English-speaking skills while Canadians who are studying Ukrainian can practise speaking Ukrainian in a relaxed and informal setting. Conversation will be in English for the first hour and in Ukrainian for the second hour.

Strong Support for ESL Classes in Saskatoon


Lining up to register for ESL classes
September 19, 2008 -- UCC-Saskatoon conducted an ESL registration night at Lawson Heights School the evening of Tuesday, September 9th. Registration was brisk, with a total of 51 Ukrainian immigrants and their spouses registering that evening. Taking late registrations into account, current numbers stand at 69.

UCC-SB offers Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) classes Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9 pm at Lawson Heights School. Students are also taking advantage of free childminding services while they attend class. There are currently 18 children signed up, making for a very active and challenging environment in the Childminding room.

For students that are unable to attend night classes because they are working night shifts, there is a Saturday morning Beginner class at Mohyla Institute. This is a 3-hour class that runs from 10am to 1 pm. Childminding is not available for the Saturday class. Also at Mohyla Institute, Communication Café is facilitated on Wednesday evening from 7-9 pm. Communication Café is an opportunity for Ukrainians to practise their English speaking skills while Canadians of Ukrainian descent can practise speaking Ukrainian.

Beginner and Intermediate night classes are full, but there are still openings in the Upper Intermediate/Advanced class on Tuesday/Thursday nights, Saturday's Beginner class and Wednesday's Conversation Café. Childminding Supervisor Needed at UCC – Saskatoon

August 20, 2008 -- We are seeking adult personnel to look after young immigrant children from Ukraine while the parents are attending English as a Second Language classes. The classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from September 11 to December 18, 2008. Class time is 7:00 - 9:00 pm at Lawson Heights School.
    If you are 18 years of age or older, speak Ukrainian and enjoy the energy of young children, this is the perfect part-time employment opportunity for you! First aid training and childminding experience would be considered an asset.

    Для українців, які відвідували класи по вивченню англійської мови та хочуть більше практики спілкування англійською, створений Розмовний клас.

UCC-Saskatoon introduces summer ESL programs

June 25, 2008 -- UCC-Saskatoon has a choice of 2 summer ESL programs for new and established Ukrainian immigrants.
    The ladies program is a unique, English/Ukrainian bilingual program which combines formal classroom instruction with a practical life skills component.
    For students that are currently enrolled in ESL classes and want to practise their English-speaking skills, there’s the Conversation Class option.
    Registration for the ladies’ program is on Tuesday, July 8th, with classes starting July 10, 2008.
   Conversation Class registration and first session is on Wednesday, July 9, 2008.

UCC-Saskatoon Awards Vesna Festival Tickets to the Best 2008 Winter-Spring ESL Students

May 6, 2008 -- Eleven UCC-SB English as a Second Language Courses students -- all are recent immigrants from Ukraine to Saskatoon -- were awarded Vesna Festival tickets, compliments of UCC-SB and Vesna Festival, in recognition of their good attendance and progress in the English language classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and in the English-Ukrainian communication cafe on Wednesday evenings.
