March 26, 2019 -- Due to a health emergency for the guest lecturer, Thursday’s planned MOHYLA LECTURE HAS BEEN CANCELLED. The lecture will NOT be rerescheduled. https://www.facebook.com/events/215925512693397/ St. Thomas More College, Shannon Library, University of Saskatchewan (1437 College Dr), Saskatoon * RESCHEDULED from Feb 14, 2019 * 2019 Mohyla Lecture (22nd annual) - "The Origins and Consequences of the Donbas War" The Kerch Strait incident in late November was the first overt Russian military attack on Ukrainian personnel since the beginning of the war. Russia has always denied being militarily involved in Donbas, there is incontrovertible evidence that it began shelling Ukrainian positions in July 2014 and sent regular troops in August 2014, and again in February 2015, in each case precipitating a Minsk agreement. Russia’s direct role prior to July 2014, however, is less clear. While it applied enormous pressure on the Ukrainian state, through propaganda and the Crimea takeover, its ability to control events on the ground may not have been what was understood in real time. Presented by the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage Launched in 1994, the Mohyla Lecture is a major academic event in Ukrainian Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. The series is devoted to a discussion of Ukrainian heritage and contemporary affairs while invited speakers are leading authorities in the field. Join us for a unique and thought-provoking evening – everyone is welcome! |
