You are invited to attend our next Ukrainian Canadian Professional & Business Association of Saskatoon luncheon.

We will be making the cheque presentation to the Saskatoon SPCA, the King of Kovbasa community partner, at the luncheon.

Our guest speaker will be Natalia Khanenko-Friesen, Associate Professor, Cultural Anthropology Head, Department of Religion and Culture at St. Thomas More College at U of S.

When she came to the U of Saskatchewan in 2001, Dr. Khanenko-Friesen was instrumental in the revival of the Ukrainian Studies at the U of S throughout the 2000s. She is the Chair of the Minor in the Ukrainian Studies, Director of the Spring Session in Ukraine (U of S study-abroad semester in Ternopil, Ukraine). A former Director of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage, she directs at the Centre the Oral History Research Program and Personal Sources Archives.  
 
She actively engages in various community events in Saskatoon and beyond. In the fall of 2015, her professional community service was recognized at St. Thomas More College, by the Marie Dutli Community Service Award.
 
She has founded and serves as an Inaugural Editor of the Engaged Scholar Journal, Canada’s first national scholarly journal on community-engagement.
 
Dr. Khanenko-Friesen’s research interests include diasporic identities and communities; post-socialist transition, labour migration, oral history, and of course Ukrainian culture.

Her book projects include two well-received monographs —
2015 - Ukrainian Otherlands: Diaspora, Homeland and Folk Imagination in the Twentieth Century, University of Wisconsin Press. July 2015.
2011 - The Other World or Ethnicity in Action: Canadian Ukrainianness at the End of the 20th Century / Inshyj svit abo etnichnist u dii: kanads’ka ukrainskist kintsia 20 stolittia. Kyiv: Smoloskyp Press, 368 pp. In Ukrainian.
 
She also authored other books on oral history —
2015 - Reclaiming the Personal: Oral History in Post-Socialist Europe. Collection of Essays, eds. Natalia Khanenko-Friesen and Gelinada Grinchenko, University of Toronto Press. September 2015.

Her articles, book chapters and reviews appeared in Anthropology of Eastern Europe Review, Canadian American Slavic Studies, Canadian Folklore, Ethnologies, Journal of Ukrainian Studies, Rodovid (Journal of Ukrainian Ethnology), Skhid-Zakhid, Slavic and East European Journal, Spaces of Identity, Ukraiina Moderna, Ukrainian Historical Journal and various book collections.
