December 4, 2009 -- On Thursday, November 27th, Provincial UCC President, Ed Lysyk, Regina Branch President, Orest Warnyca and four students, recently arrived from Ukraine, were invited to the Saskatchewan Legislature where they were introduced. Deputy Premier, the Hon. Ken Krawetz and Saskatoon MLA, Andy Iwanchuk both made remarks on the significance, impact and recognition of the famine-genocide.

A brief ceremony, held in the rotunda of the Legislative building, was chaired by Cabinet Secretary, Rick Mantey. The program included statements by the Hon. Ken Krawetz, UCC-SPC President, Ed Lysyk, and a prayer, which was read in Ukrainian by Nastiya Velychko, one of the students. A specially prepared candle was lit by the participants and left in the rotunda to stay burning until Sunday, November 29th. This candle will be lit every year to honour the many lives lost in Ukraine due to the genocide of 1932-33.
